Workshop 1: Digitalization and Internationalization for Research and Postgraduate Training

ANIE is implementing the EU funded Internationalization and Digitalization of Graduate Training and Research for the attainment of Africas Regional and Global Development Goals (DigiGrad Africa Project). The project aims at enhancing quality and relevance of postgraduate training and research in African universities through the integration of internationalization and digitalization.

A key component of this project is to support the participating African universities develop strategies for internationalization and digitalization and to build capacities of the institutions to manage internationalization activities.  This component in addition aims at training internationalization practitioners and developing a handbook to support them in managing internationalization activities in their institutions. Several activities have been undertaken in the implementation of this component of the project.

The planned workshop to be held on 9^th October 2024 in Ghana back-to-back with the ANIE conference will thus focus on training the internationalization practitioners and make steps made in the development and finalization of the handbook. It brings together participants from the participating African institutions (Laweh Open University; University of Cape Coast; Bujumbura International University; University of Burundi; University of Juba and Upper Nile University), the European partners (University of Maastricht; UC Leuven-Limburg; Sapienza University and University of Extramadura. ) and OBREAL global which is a co-coordinator of the project with ANIE.

Workshop 2 Gateway to South Africa- Co-creating models for strengthening Pan-African university partnership

This alliance of South African universities that wish to engage with the ANIE conference participants are all partners to the capacity building for Africa-centred internationalisation of higher education in South Africa, an Africa-focused internationalisation project funded by the South African Department of Higher Education and Training through its University Capacity Development Programme grants. It is a collaborative project made up of a consortium of 10 South African universities, namely the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, Durban University of Technology, Mangosuthu University of Technology, Rhodes University, University of Johannesburg, University of KwaZulu-Natal, University of Limpopo, University of the Western Cape, University of Zululand and the Walter Sisulu University. These universities are driven by the need to rethink internationalisation at the individual, institutional and broader level to expand their academic, research, teaching and learning and engagement linkages and collaborations with other universities on the continent. The primary focus of the Alliance is on building partnerships and networks with other universities on the African continent.

Workshop 3 UNESCO Story Circles – Train the Trainer Workshop

UNESCO Story Circles, developed by Dr. Darla Deardorff for UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), provide a platform for individuals from diverse backgrounds to share their stories, experiences, and perspectives.

These circles are not just about storytelling; they are about fostering empathy, understanding, and appreciation for different cultures and identities. How can intercultural competence be developed in a very concrete way?

Join this highly interactive workshop to experience UNESCO Story Circles, an intercultural methodology successfully piloted around the world both in-person and virtually. Story Circles work well in COIL, in orientations, and in classes to bring students together across differences, build community, and to practice key intercultural competencies such as listening for understanding.

This is a train-the-trainer workshop so participants will leave with an action plan on how/when/where to use Story Circles. Participants are also invited to bring other intercultural tools they use and time will be given to share these tools with each other.

Workshop 4: Introduction to Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL)

The Workshop will include presentations from COIL Founder, Jon Rubin. Welcome to COIL is part of the Professional Development for COIL initiative offered by the International Education and Partnership Office of the Durban University of Technology. Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) has been in practice as a pedagogical method at DUT for a number of years, allowing further enhancement of internationalisation and decolonisation of the curriculum at DUT.
