Network for International Office Practitioners in Africa (NIOPA)
Connecting International Education Practitioners Across Africa
For the first time, international education stakeholders in Africa have launched the Network for International Office Practitioners (NIOP), a dedicated platform aimed at strengthening collaboration and enhancing the internationalisation of higher education across the continent. This landmark initiative was introduced during the 14th Annual Conference of the African Network for Internationalisation of Education (ANIE), held from 9-11 October 2024 in Accra, Ghana.
Professor Samuel Boadi-Kusi, is the current Chairman of NIOP and Dean of the Office of International Relations at the University of Cape Coast, Ghana, the network will work closely with university leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders to advance internationalisation efforts.
Why NIOPA? Enhancing Coordination and Capacity
Until now, there has been no dedicated regional body to connect and coordinate international office practitioners across Africa. Recognizing this gap, NIOPA was formed to:
- Connect international education professionals to share best practices and expertise.
- Support the establishment of international offices in institutions that currently lack them.
- Advocate for policies that enhance internationalisation in African higher education.
- Facilitate South-South collaboration, ensuring a more integrated approach to international education.

Provide professional development and capacity-building programs for international office staff.
Strategic Activities and Future Plans
NIOPA aims to create a robust support framework for African international office practitioners through:
- Workshops and Training Programs – Enhancing professional expertise in managing international collaborations.
- Annual Conferences and Networking Events – Bringing together stakeholders to discuss emerging trends and challenges.
- Policy Advocacy – Engaging governments and institutions in developing policies that promote sustainable internationalisation.

Internationalisation has become a key strategic priority for higher education institutions worldwide. Universities across Africa are increasingly engaging in global partnerships, student and faculty exchanges, and collaborative research initiatives to enhance their global standing. These activities contribute to international rankings and provide valuable opportunities for knowledge-sharing and institutional development.
Despite this growth, many African institutions face uneven capacities in managing internationalisation efforts effectively. The establishment of NIOP seeks to bridge this gap by offering a structured support system for international office practitioners, fostering knowledge exchange, and promoting best practices across the continent.
