As part of our commitment to enhancing postgraduate education across Africa, the African Network for Internationalisation of Education (ANIE) alongside OBREAL Global under the Digigrad Africa Project is currently leading a training program for PhD and Master’s supervisors from universities in Ghana, Kenya, Burundi, and South Sudan. This initiative is being implemented under the Digigrad Africa Project is hosted by the University of Extremadura.

Strengthening Supervision Practices

At ANIE, we recognize the critical role that effective supervision plays in postgraduate education. This training program is designed to equip supervisors with the tools and strategies needed to foster high-quality mentorship and academic guidance.

Key discussions during the training have focused on:

  • Identifying strengths in existing supervision frameworks
  • Addressing challenges that hinder effective supervision
  • Exploring opportunities for collaboration and best practices
  • Understanding threats that could impact supervision quality

Through engaging presentations and interactive group discussions, participants are developing actionable strategies to enhance mentorship, feedback mechanisms, and overall academic support for postgraduate students.

Feedback from the Training

The two-day postgraduate supervisor training in Badajoz, Spain, under the Digigrad Africa Project, provided valuable insights and reflections from participants. One attendee shared:

“Mindel van de Laar is an amazing lady. She has a very clear mind and passion for her goals. Jaume Fortuny, to me, was a symbol of stability and servant leadership. Prof. Alfonso Marzal Reynolds shocked me with his appetite and ability to be our very strategic (big picture) host while also paying great attention to details. That is a quality held by few.”

We extend our sincere gratitude to all our amazing facilitators and participants for making this training a success.

Our Appreciation

We also thank the Universidad de Extremadura for hosting this important initiative and all the experts and participants who have contributed their insights and experiences. At ANIE, we remain committed to driving impactful conversations and initiatives that improve postgraduate education across Africa.
