About ANIE

Who we are

The African Network for Internationalization of Education (ANIE) is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental African network committed to advancing high-quality research, capacity-building and advocacy on the internationalisation of higher education, with a primary focus on Africa.

ANIE is a membership-based association serving its members, their institutions and organisations, and others engaged in understanding internationalisation. The network aims to be the leading organisation enhancing the understanding and development of the international dimension of higher education in Africa, by expanding knowledge and by building, strengthening and sustaining a cohort of competent professionals in the field.

ANIE is an autonomous institution whose secretariat is based at Moi University, Eldoret, Kenya. Its work spans developing research and advocacy capacity, facilitating special interest groups, sharing best practice among members, and informing policy on the international dimension of higher education with evidence.

What ANIE sets out to do

To achieve these objectives, the network brings together African scholars to take the lead in developing priority research programmes and enhancing the use of research findings for policy formulation and development in the African higher education sector.

  • Contribute to the development and understanding of internationalisation of higher education in Africa through high-impact research projects and publications.
  • Inform policy decisions related to the international dimension of higher education in Africa with high-quality research evidence.
  • Build, strengthen and sustain Africa's research capacity on internationalisation of higher education.
ANIE goals

How the network delivers on its mission

Develop and recommend desirable structures, principles, policies and practices in support of internationalisation.

Research trends, new developments and challenges related to the international dimension of higher education at the institutional, national and regional levels in Africa.

Clarify and understand the language and process of international education as it applies to the African context, by examining the meanings and definitions of key terminology used in policy and other documents.

Examine and articulate the rationales for and benefits of the internationalisation of higher education in African countries.

Build capacity of individuals, institutions and organisations involved in the implementation and study of international education.

Provide a forum to support action that maximises opportunities and minimises risks facing the internationalisation of higher education in African countries.

Facilitate the development of special interest groups (SIGs) to respond to issues that impact international education.

Provide opportunities for sharing experiences, best practices and information in international education.

Develop and facilitate a fundraising initiative to sustain ANIE's activities for immediate, short-term and long-term needs.
